Beginner Drawing Class

Learn how to draw any subject accurately using a grid!

This is a beginner class focusing on using grids to help you draw any object/ image accurately. You will learn how to photograph a botanical object, change the photograph to black and white and add a grid overlay to the image.

You will then learn how to replicate the grid on drawing paper and will enlarge and reduce its size. You will then select one grid on drawing paper and transfer your drawing onto your final drawing paper.

Your teacher, Joanna, will guide you through the process she uses to produce her highly detailed graphite botanical artworks

This class is the first in a series of classes and is followed by Drawing Leaves in Graphite (booked separately).

What you will get:

  • Three hours of tuition, all materials and paper supplied  
  • To learn how to draw using a graphite pencil to achieve a realistic outline, ready for tone and texture to be added. You will take home your photo, any paper you add a grid to, plus your clean outlined drawing drawing.

What to bring:

  • Phone/tablet with a camera
  • Enthusiasm and a willingness to give it a go

This class is for beginners or those who want to revisit their drawing skills.

You will also be able to purchase a basic starter pack after the class if you wish to continue with your drawing skills.

Drawing Leaves in Graphite

Start your botanical art journey in black and white!

You will focus on drawing leaves, using graphite pencils to achieve a realistic rendering of your selected botanical subject. 

In this class, you will learn how to draw from life and a photograph, plus learn about mark-making and tonal techniques. Your teacher, Joanna, will guide you through the process she uses to produce her detailed graphite botanical artworks. 

During the session, you will learn:

 To draw using a graphite pencil to achieve different tones
- How to hold a pencil to achieve different mark-making techniques
- Learn how to photograph your subject and edit it to black and white
- To apply this knowledge and draw your own detailed leaf

By the end of this class, you will have started a detailed drawing and will take your leaf and drawing home to continue. 

What you will get:

  • Three hours of tuition, all materials and paper supplied  
  • You will go home with class notes and resources, completed practice activity, your 5 x 7" drawing, and your chosen leaf to continue working on  
  • You will also be able to purchase a basic starter pack after the class if you wish to continue with your drawing skills.

Drawing Flowers in Graphite

Enjoy drawing flowers without the distraction of colour!


This class is a beginner to intermediate drawing class and will focus on observational drawing. You will focus on drawing a chosen flower, using graphite pencils and a paper stump to achieve a realistic rendering of your selected botanical subject. You will learn about photographing your subject, composition, shapes, tone, and textures.

Your teacher, Joanna, will guide you through the process she uses to produce her detailed graphite botanical artworks in a friendly and supportive environment that is suitable for beginners, ongoing beginners, and people wanting to revisit their drawing skills.

During the session, you will learn:

- To draw using a graphite pencil to achieve different tones and textures
- How to use a paper stump to achieve different mark-making techniques
- Learn how to photograph your subject and edit it to black and white
- To apply this knowledge and draw your own detailed flower

By the end of this class, you will have started a detailed drawing and will take your flower and drawing home to continue.

What you will get:

  • Three (3) hours of tuition, with all materials and paper supplied.
  • You will go home with class notes and resources, completed practice activity, your 5 x 7" drawing, and your chosen flower to continue working on.

What to bring:

  • A phone/tablet with a camera. Tablet preferred

This is an ongoing beginner class/ intermediate class. It builds on the basic tonal techniques taught in the beginner Drawing Leaves class. Flowers can be chosen to match your skill level.

You will also be able to purchase a basic starter pack after the class if you wish to continue with your drawing skills.

Drawing Seedpods in Graphite

Explore the joy of drawing a seed pod in graphite pencil!


This class is a beginner to intermediate drawing class and will focus on observational drawing. You will focus on drawing a chosen seedpod, using graphite pencils to achieve a realistic rendering of your selected botanical subject. You will learn about photographing your subject and shapes, tone, and textures. Your teacher, Joanna, will guide you through the process she uses to produce her detailed graphite botanical artworks in a friendly and supportive environment that is suitable for ongoing beginners and people wanting to revisit their drawing skills.

During the session, you will learn:

- To draw using a graphite pencil to achieve different tones and textures
- How to hold a pencil to achieve different mark-making techniques
- Learn how to photograph your subject and edit it to black and white
- To apply this knowledge and draw your own detailed seedpod

By the end of this class, you will have started a detailed drawing and will take your seedpod and drawing home to continue. This workshop will take place in an upstairs workshop space, which is accessible via a staircase with a landing. If you have any accessibility concerns, please message us, and we will endeavour to book a downstairs space instead.

You will also be able to purchase a basic starter pack after the class if you wish to continue with your drawing skills.

This is a beginner /intermediate class that builds on the tonal skills learnt in the Drawing Leaves class. Suitable seedpods can be selected, based on your experience with drawing.

You will also be able to purchase a basic starter pack after the class if you wish to continue with your drawing skills.
